Mutts in Distress are bringing this beautiful German Shepherd (Alsatian) from Bulgaria, where she was spotted on the Internet as looking for a home.
A year on from rescuing Sandy, the white German Shepherd from Greece with the same condition, we are now going to work with Chaim, the vet who repaired Sandy, to fix this little girl and give her a better life too.
Her surgery will be carried out free of charge by this very caring vet and all follow up care will be carried out by Mutts in Distress.
We would like to find Maria a home of her own, so that like Sandy, her sad life will become happy ever after.
Maria is now safe in the care of Mutts in Distress and on 10th March, we are taking her to see Chaim for her initial visit and x Rays, ready to start the next part of her journey to a better life. We will share all costs involved with Chaim, to get Maria’s legs straightened – just as we did with Sandy.
Donations are urgently required for her pain killers, pre-op scans, bandaging etc. These are needed in order for Mutts in Distress to help this poor dog.
Together, we WILL make it all better for Maria.
Update 12th March 2015
Well, Maria’s journey to a happy, healthy life has begun. She is currently being operated on.
Here she is, all smiles and oblivious to what is to come.
Maria has been assessed by Chaim the vet and had some x rays taken to show the extent of the malformed bones in her legs.
She was a very good girl and is now ready for the operation to take place.
13th March 2015
The operation has taken place and Maria has come through very well. Here is the x ray of her new straight leg. Once this one has been fixed, the other leg will be operated on. Amazingly, she was up and about and ready for a feed later on. Then she went for a tiny stroll in the grounds.
She will need to learn to walk using her pads and not the knuckle of her foot but she will do it.
Amazing what can be achieved if we all work together.
Chaim and his amazing team, the girls who raised the money to get her here, the transporters … there’s a long chain of people who cared enough to make this new life possible for sweet little Maria – and she’s oblivious to it all. We will find her a home and family where she can come to know life as a normal dog.
Update March 24th 2015
Here is Maria proving what a brave little girl she is, all bandaging off and her leg is healing well. Soon it will be time to start mending the other leg.
Bare legs and looking good!
Update April 7th 2015
Maria continues to recover excellently and the best news is that she now has a home waiting for her to be cared for and loved as part of a family.
Her second leg operation will take place soon.
Update May 2015
Maria has had her second leg operation and has recovered well. The first leg suffered a fine fracture which delayed further work and she may need to have it pinned. She is now well on the way to two straight legs just like Sandy, thanks to the wonderful work of Chaim and his team.
Update August 2016
This is Maria one year later. Settled happily in her new home and winning a high achievement award for obedience at our dog training classes.
Update May 2017
Maria is loving her new home and living the life of a happy, mobile dog. She is excelling at dog school, being top of the class. Her new legs are straight and she uses them with no hesitancy !
Such a wonderful outcome from her poor start. A happy, smiley girl with beautiful legs !
